Build a New Deck or Just Replace Decking

Build A New Deck

Building a new deck involves a variety of considerations to ensure that the project meets your needs, complies with local regulations, and provides long-term value. At Creative Deck & Vinyl we can guide you through this in our free design and estimate consultation.

Usage: Determine how you plan to use the deck—entertaining guests, dining, relaxing, or as a play area for children. This will influence its size, layout, and features.

Dimensions: Choose the size and shape of the deck based on your available space and how it will fit with your home and yard.

Layout: Plan the layout to ensure it complements the flow of your outdoor space and provides adequate access and functionality.

Decking Material:

  • Wood: Options include various grades of pressure-treated lumber. Wood provides a natural look but requires more maintenance.
  • Composite: Made from a mix of wood fibers and plastic. It’s low-maintenance and durable but can be more expensive.

Replace Old Decking

The decision to replace just the deck boards or the entire deck depends on several factors, including the condition of the existing deck, your budget, and your long-term plans for the space. Here are some considerations to help you make an informed decision:

Condition of the Existing Deck: Evaluate the overall condition of your deck, including the deck frame, joists, and supports. If the underlying structure is in good shape, without signs of significant damage or rot, it may be possible to replace only the decking boards. However, if the deck frame is compromised or shows signs of structural issues, it might be necessary to replace the entire deck for safety reasons.

Cost Considerations: Replacing the entire deck will generally involve higher costs compared to replacing just the decking boards. It involves removing the old deck entirely, including the frame, and constructing a new deck from scratch. If budget is a concern, replacing only the deck boards can be a more affordable option.

Desired Changes or Upgrades: Consider any desired changes or upgrades you may want for your deck. If you want to modify the size, shape, or layout of your deck or incorporate new features like additional levels, stairs, or railings, it may be more practical to replace the entire deck to accommodate those changes.

Composite & Wood Decking

Composite Decking

Composite decking is a popular choice for outdoor spaces due to its durability, low maintenance, and aesthetic versatility. It’s made from a blend of wood fibers and plastic, which gives it the appearance of natural wood while leveraging the benefits of synthetic materials.

Creative Deck has been leading the way in maintenance free since the early 2000's when it became available. We work with all major brands of composite decking including Fiberon, Trex, Timber Tech and much more. It doesn't need any painting, sealing or treatment of any kind and will pay for itself well within it's lifetime.

  • Durability: Composite decking is resistant to rot, warping, and splintering, making it a long-lasting option. It can withstand harsh weather conditions, including heavy rain and intense sunlight.
  • Low Maintenance: Unlike traditional wood decks, composite decking doesn’t require regular sanding, staining, or sealing. A simple cleaning with soap and water is sufficient to keep it looking good.
  • Aesthetic Options: Composite decking comes in a variety of colors, textures, and styles, allowing you to achieve the look you want without the variability of natural wood. Some options even mimic the grain patterns of wood closely.
  • Environmental Considerations: Many composite decking products are made from recycled materials, which can be a more eco-friendly choice compared to using wood.
  • Safety: Composite decking is often designed to be slip-resistant and splinter-free, which can be especially beneficial for families with young children or pets.
  • Cost: While composite decking typically has a higher upfront cost compared to traditional wood, its longevity and low maintenance requirements can make it a more cost-effective option over time.

Wood Decking

Using wood decking for your outdoor space provides a classic, natural look that many people find appealing. Wood decking can enhance the beauty of your yard or patio and offer a warm, inviting area for relaxation and entertainment.

  • Premium Quality: Each piece of our pressure treated wood undergoes meticulous selection to ensure it represents the finest quality, boasting minimal knots for unparalleled beauty and performance.
  • Screwed Installation: Our decking is securely fastened with screws to prevent any lifting or popping.

Professional Grade Deck Materials

Whether you are using Wood, Composite, PVC, or Vinyl Material, it will be from a reputable manufacturer such as Azek, Timbertech, and Fiberon.

We Exceed Building Codes

We are not your average local deck contractor. In our opinion, Maryland building code is not good enough. Whenever possible we build our decks with 12" on center joists (16" code) and 2x10 joists (typically 2x8" is code). This gives our decks a concrete feel when walking on them by taking away bounce. Not to mention, this accounts for future abuse by keeping the deck safe when it's pushed beyond its design limits.
